I met Reg from Salvos (Oasis) at the StreetNet van last night.

StreetNet is a bus that does coffees and crispy cremes and Salvos crew doing outreach AND.... has several laptops set up in the bus that you can get free internet access on! How awesome is that!

Not sure what all the stops are, but I saw them at Jeffs Van then at Green Park when YOTS van was there. They go to a few locations beyond Sydney city like Paramatta and can't remeber the rest, maybe Reg will post and let us know, but he did say they are two nights in the city and five nights a week all up.

Anyway it was very impressive to see such a service existed, I've never heard of anything like that anywhere in the world.

Absolutely brilliant!

This is one thing that is so much needed. Internet access is fast becoming a fundamental necessity of Australian society.

Access to the internet, even if it's only once or twice a week, will increase people's chances of keeping up with the emerging trends in society. It will also enable people to make job applications, deal online with Centrelink, correspond via email with friends, join chatrooms or the homeless forums, and even relieve the tedium of street life with online games - just for a start.

Congratulations to Reg and the StreetNet crews for perceiving, and acting on, the need.

I think that is a brilliant idea.
I wonder if anyone is doing it in Melbourne?

P.S.
You did give them a HLF flyer right? ;)

That's excellent and hopfully it's a lead others can follow. When your broke homeless etc Email can be your only way of communicating with friends and others who you don't see regularly.

What a awesome idea!

Internet is a great communication tool, people can only judge you for you on here and not for what you look like. Also makes applying for jobs easier, meeting new people and chatting to people you would otherwise never get a chance to.
