If you are homeless and are an ex service man or woman you should contact
Veterans Aid
40 Buckingham Palace Road,
Victoria,
London,
SW1W 0RE

Phone 0800 0126867 or email info@veterans-aid.net
Opening Times:
Monday to Thursday 08:30 until 15:30
Friday 08:30 to 13:30
http://www.veterans-aid.net/index.html

Last year Veterans Aid provided 19,739 nights of accommodation
for veterans who would otherwise have been on the streets!
I am one of them and was homeless for over thirty years, I now live in New Belvedere House run by VA. Believe me when I say that they will turn no ex service person away.

Some of you know that I have been waiting to move from the
"Veterans Aid Residence "to "The Sir Oswold Stowl Foundation" which offers individual flats to ex veterans who are disabled in Fulham.

Today, they contacted Pat the manager to inform her that a flat has come up and it's been given to me. I shall be moving in on 18th August.

I'm over the moon, it's an enormous step for me; one that will enable me to live out the rest of my years in my own home without fear of becoming homeless again.
They also have an on site medical and doctor team 24/7 all the year round and later down the road if I need extra care I will receive it , as for now I will be fully independent.

Pat and a few of the younger chaps in NBH will go and paint the place out for me and Veterans Aid will fund me with all the new furniture and things that I will need.

If I look back over the past 16 months it's amazing the steps that I have taken. Probably I'm one of the luckiest people alive today,in fact I am.
I all most feel guilty for everything that I have received, the help and human kindness from so many people.
I sign the lease this morning.

Thank you Jor-EL,
I have the tenancy agreement and the keys in my possession as I type.

It's the first time in over thirty years. In away I feel almost guilty.
I look at the world around me and all those that don't have a home, the pensioners that can't afford heating and have to cut back on food and basic necessities of life because they are on a minimum pension. The single parents that struggle to make ends meet.

I have never thought that the British Government owed me a penny. I served on operational submarines during the “cold war” received three medals including one with two bars for having served on two different submarines that did three monthly patrols at sea chasing phantoms. The British people unaware of what was going on, slept safely in their beds and knew that a conflict with the then USSR would be avoided.
I was well paid for my job and enjoyed it.
On leaving the service I had done my job and I have never blamed the Navy for my unwanted friend Parkinson's Disease or any of my mental health issues;(years of depresion).

I came back to the UK after having lived for thirty years on the streets and as many of you know I slept on a park bench for the past seven of them. Had I not had PD, coupled with the impossibility for me to receive medical help I would not have returned.
I didn’t come back to rip off the system or try to find a way of not working. All I wanted was that I could receive what was due to me under British law.

I am truly fortunate and belive me it's something that I shall never forget.

ncn, ( with apologies for the long post)
