The homeless in Auckland

Ive been researching homelessness in NZ and I was interested about some things. Ive read on official Government sites that in Auckland there are about 400 homeless people. However, Ive seen on other sites that this number is not in any way accurate. If I wanted to help the homeless, whats the best thing for me to do? Im wanting to understand why people are homeless in NZ and if there are some that could be eligible for a website that I have in mind that helps the homeless.
