I really do not undestand how those in the Colorado Springs tent city off I-25 mangage to stay alive through a Colorado winter. But reading about them is better than reading about a "winter tent city in Florida" (no offence).

It's a dry cold. When I moved to the Springs long ago, to train at the Olympic Training Center, I got a room up in the top of an old Victorian house, it was COLD. I got painters' dropcloth plastic and put that on the windows for an extra layer and to stop drafts, and I dunno, all I slept with on the bed with this sleeping bag that was there, with pictures of canoes and ducks on it, lol. I didn't have super good insulation but I was OK.
Here in the SF Bay Area it's not as cold but it gets DAMP. That makes it worse.

This coming winter will be the third winter for the tent city in Ann Arbor, Michigan, my state. When I spoke to the leader on the phone, I asked him how they manage in the winter. He told me that they just use a lot of blankets.
It seems like it would be very rough as we get horrendous winters here. But, somehow, they do it.
(I may end up staying there this coming winter, unfortunately. I'm still not homeless...yet. Yet is the keyword. It will happen, short of a miracle.)

You can use a lot of blankets and .... you can also sleep together. You have to be pretty good friends, but people used to do this all the time.
the lucky thing with Co Springs is, they have a lot of military surplus items in thrift stores, garage sales, swapmeets, etc. It's a military town and when it gets cold, you see the field jackets etc come out, military gear is pretty good for cold.
