Default Safe Ground Sacramento, CA

Safe Ground people that are homeless have mostly stayed together and are camping by the river (not approved by city or legal). The Mayor has promised them motel room vouchers and has agreed they can stay together in same motel. This was suppose to be available to them for a month or for the whole winter, we didn't get any guarantees. A site that was to be used for shelter for families fell through (Rancho Cordova) so motel vouchers may have to go to families. Most of the SG people wanted to continue to stay outdoors together until Safe Ground is got, but thought it was a good move politically to take the vouchers. One reason is that - what would city council members think, who are already skeptical of a tent city/Safe Ground, that these homeless people don't want housing anyway? Also, Mayor Johnson has promised to work hard this winter toward Safe Ground. He said it would be impossible to get approvals and minds changed before April. It would be hard to get some approved ground without the Mayor. He is very much championing us. Motel rooms are suppose to be available Nov. 11. We have lots of work, meanwhile, community outreach, inreach, training, fundraising, etc.
